Feeding Therapy
Is your child demonstrating bottle refusal? Does your child only eat a handful of brand specific foods? Is your child having a difficult time transitioning from purees to solids? Is your child unable to chew varying food textures or drink from an open cup? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then your child may benefit from feeding therapy and we would love to have the opportunity to work with you and your family!
At SOAR Pediatric Therapy, we want to provide parents and caregivers with the confidence to help your child succeed, so we love when we have the opportunity to come into your house for mealtime or go with you to a family favorite restaurant to help your child work through their challenges!
Within therapy sessions, we utilize Dr. Kay Toomey’s Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding, as well as Food Chaining to help expand your child’s food repertoire. We also address delayed oral motor skills, open mouth breathing and myofunctional disorders through exercises and specific practice.
We love working with little ones to create foundational feeding skills from the root as well as those who have formed unfavorable eating habits over several years.
Evaluations
We provide thorough feeding evaluations for children aged newborn to 18 years of age. During the evaluation, extensive medical history is obtained, in addition to a current food repertoire and 3-day food log. Furthermore, presentation of preferred and non-preferred foods are encouraged to allow the therapist to see your child’s interaction with varying foods. Throughout the evaluation, the clinician will model varying feeding therapy strategies to determine appropriate recommendations. Children who often benefit from feeding therapy may demonstrate one or several of the following:
Bottle/food refusal
Food selectivity by brand and/or texture
Oral motor dysfunction/Myofunctional disorder
GI issues (i.e. vomiting, constipation, etc.)
Failure to thrive
Mealtime tantrums
Open mouth breathing
